Fukushu Kumquats – 1 Pound

How will you Fukushu?

Fukushu Kumquats are the small but powerful citrus fruits you just have to try! With a tart-sweet flavor that can’t be beat, the real flavor is in the rind/peel itself! When you bite into them, you get that wonderful burst of tart citrus flavor, then comes the sweetness from the peel! You can eat them “as-is,” peel and all, or as many people like to do, you can make a marmalade-preserve with them. These little guys are truly special!

So, if you like the juicy citrus taste of mandarins, but a little more tart, and you enjoy small little flavor packed kumquats then you are sure to enjoy Fukushu Kumquats! The rind is orange and thinner than other varieties of kumquats. The flesh is orange, “sweet-tart” and acidic, and does contains a few seeds. Fukushus are quite versatile to enjoy. Think of all the great ways you can use them in your kitchen…you can eat them as is as a healthful snack, or sliced up in salads for that added “zing” of flavor. Of course they are awesome when used purees. The juice can be used in marinades or cocktails, and even made into syrup. And think of how flavorful a vinaigrette salad dressing would be with that tangy citrus flavor…Yum-O! Right?  B-T-W… Fukushus will keep up to two weeks when refrigerated.

When are Fukushu Kumquats available?

Fukushu Kumquats have a rather different harvesting season than oranges. They are typically available at various times of the growing year (which is heavily dependent on weather conditions), so their availability throughout the year will vary.

Limequats – 5 Pounds

5 lb. Limequat orders now come with FedEx Shipping INCLUDED in the price!

Limequats, so tangy! Calling all creative chefs, cooks, and mixologists…The LIMEQUAT is now here! Limequats, as you might imagine, are a cross between a lime and a kumquat. The fruit is smaller in size and oval in shape, like a kumquat. Their color tend to be mostly yellow (with some green) and they do contain seeds. Limequats have a sweet tasting rind and an intense “tart” pulp that tastes similar to limes but more acidic. Due to their “mouth puckering” characteristics, the uses for the limequat are probably better suited for cooking than trying to eat them as a snack. Their tart juice and pulp make for some seriously great jams, or preserves. Limequats can also be used in most other recipes that call for sour lemon flavors, but leave it to your “culinary imagination” to utilize them in ways yet unknown! Do you like the taste of intense lemon-lime flavors in your drinks? They go especially well in mixed alcohol drinks or squeeze one into a tall glass of ice tea or ice water for a “bright” flavor sure to give your taste buds a lift.

When are Limequats available? Limequats are typically available intermittently throughout the year, so please call for availability. Due to limited quantities, annual market pricing can vary from season to season.

Calamondins, or as they are sometimes called in the Philippines; calamonding or calamansi are believed to be a natural hybrid, parented with the more familiar kumquat, and more than likely Chinese in origin. The peel is thin and smooth, and when fully ripe, bright orange. The flesh is orange, juicy and and very acid. These miniature orange-like fruits have a strong tart flavor that is often used in Thai cooking and can be used in place of lemon. You can use calamondin puree in cake recipes, and they make an excellent fruit for making marmalade.

Seville Oranges – 5 Pounds

We are currently shipping Smooth Flat Seville Variety of Oranges

5lbs of Seville Oranges with FedEx Shipping included in the price!

Seville Oranges, Sour Oranges or as some like to call them, “Marmalade Oranges”… whatever name you give them, Pearson Ranch now has them! Native to Southeast Asia, most citrus experts believe them to be (most likely) a cross between a Pomelo and a Mandarin Orange. What makes Sevilles so special? Because Seville Oranges have a higher amount of pectin than regular sweet oranges, and therefore giving a better set and a higher yield, they are prized for making the best orange marmalade! Sevilles are also used in making compotes as well as orange-flavored liqueurs. The unripe fruit, called narthangai, is commonly used in Southern Indian cuisine, and if you are a seasoned chef, you may have even used Seville Oranges in making a bigarade sauce for the French classic, Duck a l’orange.

We are currently shipping Smooth Flat Seville Variety of Oranges

The  Smooth Flat Seville apparently originated in Australia and arrived in California first in way back in 1929 as a sour orange-pomelo hybrid. The hybridization with the pomelo gives this particular Seville Orange a sweeter flavor, but THEY ARE indeed Sevilles!

Moro Blood Oranges – 20 Pounds

Moro Blood Oranges NOW available!

Moro Blood Oranges… The “Blood” orange is one of the most colorful varieties in the world of Specialty Citrus products. They are the earliest ripening and darkest of the blood oranges. The fruit is generally smaller than an average orange. The outer rind of the blood orange is usually somewhat pitted in texture. Bloods are also one of the most “under used” pieces of fruit in the world of citrus. Try using blood oranges in a “Sangria” drink. Use both some of the juice from the bloods and cut them into thin slices (along with slices of lime) to “float” along the top of the Sangria bowl as a colorful and spectacular garnish. You could also replace regular orange juice for Blood Orange juice in an orange cake recipe and use slices of the blood orange to decorate the top, for a bold and exciting twist! If you can dream up a recipe with oranges and orange juice, why not add some “drama” to the mix and see what you can create. Besides, when cooking from the heart with blood oranges, there is never the risk of your efforts ever being…in “vein”! Did you know…? The blood orange is often (and incorrectly) described as a hybrid between a pomelo and a tangerine or other citrus, but it is merely just a genetic mutation of a sweet orange. The distinctive dark flesh color of blood oranges are due to the presence of the pigment anthocyanin, this pigment is common to many fruit and flower varieties, but uncommon in citrus, however obviously not to blood oranges.

When are Moro Bloods available?

Bloods have a rather short harvesting season. They are typically available from January thru MARCH. Due to the small availability and short season, annual market pricing will also vary from season to season.
