Due to increasing water fees from the Sustainable Ground Water Management Act (SGMA) and power cost increases due to the continuing drought, we have added a small price increase to each order. Please read the ag water info page for details. Thank you.
Sanguinelli Blood Oranges
Sanguinelli Blood Oranges from Pearson Ranch! Although some people believe that most blood oranges are from Italian origins, however, the Sanguinelli also called a “Sanguinello” was first discovered in SPAIN back in 1929…“Mama Mia”! This late ripening blood orange has more of an oval shape than do Moro Bloods, but have an equally delicious “citrusy” flavor with “berrylike” notes.
How do you enjoy your bloods?
So what to do with Sanguinelli Blood Oranges? Here is where your use of them is only limited by your culinary imagination. Try them in your new favorite marmalade recipe and add a real splash of color. How about in a vinaigrette salad dressing to get your guests or family talking! And whatever you do, don’t forget desert. Imagine, Sanguinelli Blood Orange cake topped with blood orange segments, oh yeah! Bloods can also be used in making craft beer and even harder mixed “adult beverages” and spirits. Making a batch of “Sangria”? Let blood oranges add some extra color. So now that you know where to get them, why not order a box, and let’s get cooking.
Something special about Sanguinelli Blood Oranges…
The dark red color of the juice they produce has something in common with a totally different fruit that you wouldn’t be quick to guess. If the juice color looks familiar to that of a pomegranate, it’s because they both have the same compound anthocyanin which gives them that dramatic red color.
The blood orange is often (and incorrectly) described as a hybrid between a pomelo and a tangerine or other citrus, but it is merely just a genetic mutation of a sweet orange.
When are Sanguinelli Bloods available?
Bloods have a rather short harvesting season. They are typically available beginning MARCH thru APRIL. Due to the small availability and short season, annual market pricing will also vary from season to season.
