Fukushu Kumquats – 1 Pound
How will you Fukushu?
Fukushu Kumquats are the small but powerful citrus fruits you just have to try! With a tart-sweet flavor that can’t be beat, the real flavor is in the rind/peel itself! When you bite into them, you get that wonderful burst of tart citrus flavor, then comes the sweetness from the peel! You can eat them “as-is,” peel and all, or as many people like to do, you can make a marmalade-preserve with them. These little guys are truly special!
So, if you like the juicy citrus taste of mandarins, but a little more tart, and you enjoy small little flavor packed kumquats then you are sure to enjoy Fukushu Kumquats! The rind is orange and thinner than other varieties of kumquats. The flesh is orange, “sweet-tart” and acidic, and does contains a few seeds. Fukushus are quite versatile to enjoy. Of course they are awesome when used purees. The juice can be used in marinades or cocktails, and even made into syrup. Limequats – 5 Pounds
Limequats, so tangy! Calling all creative chefs, cooks, and mixologists…The LIMEQUAT is now here! Limequats, as you might imagine, are a cross between a lime and a kumquat. The fruit is smaller in size and oval in shape, like a kumquat. Their color tend to be mostly yellow (with some green) and they do contain seeds. Limequats have a sweet tasting rind and an intense “tart” pulp that tastes similar to limes but more acidic. Due to their “mouth puckering” characteristics, the uses for the limequat are probably better suited for cooking than trying to eat them as a snack. Their tart juice and pulp make for some seriously great jams, or preserves. Limequats can also be used in most other recipes that call for sour lemon flavors, but leave it to your “culinary imagination” to utilize them in ways yet unknown! Bergamot Sour Orange…You might know bergamot sour oranges as a yellowish green fruit used for sauces, perfumes, marmalades, and even exotic recipes. However, they are probably better known for their production of bergamot oil, a component of many types of tea, particularly Earl Grey tea. Bergamots are thought to be a hybrid of sour orange and citron or lemon, and if you ever tried one “as is” you would probably agree that they are! Historically speaking, the word bergamot is believed to come from the Turkish term “beg-armade,” meaning “Lord’s pear“. They are primarily grown in southern Italy, in which the majority of the world’s supply of bergamot sour oranges now comes. However, if you are looking to buy them, you don’t have to travel to Italy (although it does sound like it would be fun) in order to get some for your very own. Calamondins – 1 Pound
Calamondins, or as they are sometimes called in the Philippines; calamonding or calamansi are believed to be a natural hybrid, parented with the more familiar kumquat, and more than likely Chinese in origin. The peel is thin and smooth, and when fully ripe, bright orange. The flesh is orange, juicy and and very acid. These miniature orange-like fruits have a strong tart flavor that is often used in Thai cooking and can be used in place of lemon. You can use calamondin puree in cake recipes, and they make an excellent fruit for making marmalade.
