How To Best Store Your Citrus
A lot of people often ask..."what is the best way to store such delicious citrus?" And because you asked, we are happy to help you with the answer!
FIRST, our citrus products, just like all fresh produce purchased from a grocery store, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends washing fruits and vegetables under running water just before eating, cutting, or cooking.
Inspection: Inspect your fruit for any bad pieces that show sings of decay that may have occurred during the shipping process, and throw them out. Even with Pearson Ranch’s industry leading standards for quality, occasionally there will be fruit that; although visibly showed no signs of decay during the sorting and grading process, may have started to deteriorate while en route. Remember, Pearson Ranch has a 100% satisfaction guarantee on all our products. So, if you find any bad pieces of fruit in your box upon arrival, please contact us so we can either replace or credit you for the number of pieces of fruit that may have gone bad during transit.
Storage: Please note that the TEMPERATURE you store your fruit is one of the most important factors in keeping your fruit fresher and longer. Of course the best place to keep them would be in your refrigerator, but trying to fit a whole box of oranges in your fridge would simply take up too much space. So, here are some other ideas for storing your fruit. Try storing your box in an area with relatively high humidity like an unheated garage, basement or shed where the temperature will also stay at a uniform temperature without a large “swing” between the daytime high and the nighttime low. The cooler, you store your fruit without going below 38.F the longer it will keep. On average, oranges kept at 40-44.F can potentially be stored up 4-5 weeks, at 48.F they can potentially be stored for 3-4 weeks, and even in temperatures up to an average of 60.F, oranges should keep up to 2-3 weeks. The times listed are just averages (yours may vary depending on storage conditions), and are dependent on doing the following: It’s very important that you store your fruit as soon as possible with very little handling. Don’t drop or stack other objects on top of the box. Be sure to open your box of oranges frequently. Examine the fruit and remove any that are showing signs of decay. Just one or two pieces that are going bad can quickly spread to the rest of the box, which would mean less delicious California citrus for you to enjoy and share.
